8 Phonebox Magazine | October 2025www.olneycameraclub.co.ukAt a recent club meeting we received a talk by Ann Miles, entitled %u2018Weather to Photograph and What%u2019. This talk used some of her chosen images to illustrate how we could approach our photography at times when the weather is not ideal. The talk revealed that a bright sunny day often doesn%u2019t display the best conditions for our outdoor photography, suggesting that we should gain inspiration from fog, snow, rain and wind instead. Ann certainly displayed some fi ne images in these conditions, and admitted that she had been soaked, frozen cold and windswept on frequent occasions; as we all must suff er for our art. When we say that a bright blue-sky day does not give the best conditions, it%u2019s from a photography context, of course. The bright, unsubtle light creates too much contrast, making exposure control tricky.%u00a0At a club talk on wedding photography, the speaker advised us that the best wedding photography weather is a dry, grey day, so that the bride%u2019s white outfi t was not too bright and the groom%u2019s suit not too dark. Only a fool would suggest that to the bride%u2019s mother! The Scottish Highlands are a good place to go for moody clouds with drizzle and wind thrown in. The mountains would just not display their charm accompanied by a bright, sunny, cloudless blue sky. Of course, for the best results in your photography, you should plan your locations and timing carefully to be in the right place at the right time and hope the weather works for you. Be ready to adapt to situations as they occur. It is clear from our speaker, Ann Miles, that she has done just that on her photographic journey, illustrated by lovely images; we thank Ann for her excellent talk. For an easier, more rewarding experience with less dramatic compositions, you could simply take your camera/phone on a short trip out. We show here a few local places of interest.Olney Camera Club: Weather or Not...Cowpers Alcove by Andy GailerGoosey Bridge in the fog by Andy GailerStevington Mill in Yellow by Andy GailerNext Meetings:Wednesday 29th October: Street Talk by Steve Williams.
