A price was agreed to clear garden waste but instead of disposing of it properly, Lewis and McCartney illegally dumped it near homes at Woodhouse Court in Stantonbury.Milton Keynes City Council%u2019s Environmental Crime Offi cers discovered the rubbish and, as well as arranging a clear-up, traced it back to the homes it came from. The matter went to court, where Lewis and McCartney were fi ned %u00a3320 each and made to pay a victim surcharge of %u00a3128 each, as well as the City Council%u2019s investigation and legal costs of %u00a32,000. Lewis also pleaded guilty to one other off ence of fl y tipping. Neither had a waste carrier%u2019s license. The original residents did not get fi ned on this occasion, but the City Council is reminding local people that if someone else fl y-tips your waste, you may be prosecuted yourself. While a %u2018too good to be true%u2019 price for waste removal can be tempting, it%u2019s essential to check who you are paying to take items away. Always check the trader has a valid waste carrier%u2019s license %u2013 if they don%u2019t, they%u2019re operating illegally. You can check this easily on the GOV.UK website. %u201cWe won%u2019t hesitate to crack down on fl y-tipping as it%u2019s unsightly and can be dangerous, as well as being expensive for us to clean up,%u201d said Cllr Jennifer Wilson-Marklew, Cabinet Member for the Public Realm.%u201cThe court understood the seriousness of these off ences and this pair are paying the price. I can%u2019t stress enough that everyone needs to take responsibility for their rubbish %u2013 it only takes a moment to check someone has a waste carrier license. If they don%u2019t, and your waste ends up dumped, then you are at risk of being prosecuted.%u201d
