But it%u2019s not just any old VE Day. This is a landmark moment as we celebrate 80 years since the Allies secured victory in Europe (VE) when Germany surrendered unconditionally. On 8th May 1945, Britain celebrated the war%u2019s end and declared a national holiday. Prime Minister Winston Churchill ensured there was enough beer in London for revellers, and across Britain people put up red, white and blue bunting (bought without having to use ration coupons) and held street parties. The dark days of that second war are long behind us now, of course, but the memories of those we lost in it %u2013 including many from Olney, Newport Pagnell and the small towns and villages in our region that became Milton Keynes in the 1960s %u2013 still hurt in the minds and hearts of so many friends and relatives.That%u2019s why it%u2019s important to stop for a moment and refl ect on this momentous occasion when it arrives on the 8th of this month. There will be ample opportunity to take part in the special day as local organisations and groups plan their own ways of marking it. We list some of them in our special round-up on page 38.It%u2019s at times like these that I ask readers across our region to remember how lucky we are to have the freedom, liberty and relative safety that we enjoy today as we go about our daily lives at home, work and school. Not everyone has this privilege, as our regular Olney Ukraine News page (52) so often reminds us. This month we highlight a brave local man who gives up his time to volunteer with charity organisations that help people in war-torn Ukraine. Sobering thoughts indeed, but they should not detract from the fun and exciting times we are lucky enough to enjoy in Olney and the surrounding villages. We showcase many brilliant leisure activities available to see and do on our various feature pages. There%u2019s theatre, clubs, associations, gardening, cooking, motoring and sport, to name but a few.And we can do all these things because we fought for the freedom to be allowed to. That%u2019s why we should all stand as one on 8th May, refl ect, and give thanks. Stay safe.Ron Hall, Editor
