Looking compositionally, we run in across the beach in the distance, then we loop back through the peak, but we also loop back underneath as well, and it takes us through to the little gap on the far side %u2013 before compositionally, we return. The atmosphere on this image is quite magical as well; we%u2019ve got that misty feel, a faded glory of mountains. I even get the feeling the sun might be behind that mist patch at the top, shining through, just hidden enough that it%u2019s given us an almost heavenly glow without it coming through and spoiling the highlight. I like very much the very low-key feel amongst the trees as well. It%u2019s a beautiful image.%u201d%u201cAutumn Colours%u201d Digital Image CategorySimply Autumn Colours by Bryan DayThe judge said: %u201cThere are diff erent interpretations here: starting with this banding, the water at the bottom, we%u2019ve got autumnal trees, this moody, stormy sky with a hint of a rain-shower, coming down at the top right. This is absolute autumn colours; it shouts the theme at us. Beautiful colouration, and given the lighting conditions, I think you%u2019ve done well to keep the colours as saturated as you have. It doesn%u2019t feel like there%u2019s huge amounts of sunlight %u2013 maybe it%u2019s behind us, and it%u2019s just catching. It absolutely nails the theme.%u201d%u201cContre Jour%u201d Digital Image CategoryDusky City by Bryan DayThe judge said: %u201cA very glossy image %u2013 it shines, and that%u2019s very appropriate for the glass and steelwork we are seeing here within the cityscape itself. That glow coming from behind the building; it feels almost unreal, but then I see a slight patch of light coming across the building, just to the right of the sun %u2013 or is it even the moon? It%u2019s not easy to tell. I like what you%u2019ve done here, I like the feeling of this image. Another simple image, but one that is quite impactful; the contre jour light in the middle, and even that little refl ection on that building %u2013 just on a third, captures the eye and gives us balance.%u201dWe thank the competition judge, Ben Pike, for his excellent image critique.
