Newport Pagnell Matters
The Town CounCil meeting on Monday 13th was joined by Brian Stewart the Borough’s newly appointed head of flood and water contingency planning – risk assessment and such. This new appointment is intended to move control and oversight of these things from central government to local level; the work of DeFRA, the environment Agency and Anglian water should hopefully now be co- ordinated whilst giving local voice more control. Mr. Stewart certainly sounded confident, perhaps we must see the change as step one towards the forthcoming big society. Meanwhile, even at local level this looks to become three more committees for MK to afford.
The town’s own working committees are all showing steady ahead except for the Sports and Social committee. C’llor eastman’s commitments within the borough council make it very difficult for him to continue in this post; he has offered to resign in the belief that to do so might be in everyone’s best interest but for the present this problem remains held over. There was to be discussion of the financial outcome arising from the Tesco deal with the borough but part of this was expected to prove confidential so the press must withdraw. i think i detected, from the woodwork, that the total bribe to the borough is around £2.3 million from which newport Pagnell may (no promises) enjoy around six or seven percent in return for suffering 100% of the pain and inconvenience. The people on the other side of the motorway are doing quite nicely from their grip on the affairs of north Bucks.
LIBRARY AN IMPORTANT ASSET
The Town CounCil were not the only people taking our attention; The Friends of newport Pagnell library met on Tuesday 7th; this was a very well attended meeting and a cheerful one. library services have become a very wide range of support for more than only readers. The reference and archive sections are powerful support for all manner of research of a local nature. The formation of this group owes much to the threat of library closures in a philistine world which considers mere bodily comforts more important than intellectual health. There was discussion as to who do and who do not borrow library books. There were no teenagers at the meeting – hardly surprising – but what did strike as a matter for concern was the complete absence of Secondary School Teachers. There will be a further meeting on July 5th and maybe we will see more teachers, when all said and done who are better placed to encourage teenage literacy. GB
