Our June meeting saw the return of John Cornwall who gave us a slide show about Bulgaria. in spite of there being a strong mafia presence and a lot of crime, he has visited the country several times, keeping an eye open for photographic opportunities.
Believe it or not, Bulgaria has 221 bird species, 116 butterfly species and 17 different species of oak tree.
A donkey and trap is still the favoured form of transport in country areas as there is no tarmac surface on the roads, and in the mountains it is quite common to see goatherds tending their flocks, sometimes mixed in with cattle.
in villages women are often seen sitting in the shade of a tree spinning wool from their own sheep.
there are lots of edible snails living in the limestone areas and, after rainfall at night, the following morning sees people collecting the snails by the hundred, which are then sent for export.
We saw pictures of beautiful wildflower meadows, lots of orchids, frogs and insects, and spent an enjoyable time transported to another world.
the raffle was won by Kathleen Allwood, second gill Senior.
the competition, for an item beginning with ‘t’, was won by Angela Hancox with a tin of turkish cigarettes, 2nd evelyn mison with a typewriter-shaped clock, 3rd gill mapley with a toasting fork.
newport Pagnell Women’s institute meets on the second tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the royal British Legion Club, and are always delighted to welcome new members. Our July meeting will be a guided walk around the town led by a member of the local Historical Society. in August Chris Ward will tell us about a journey from John O’groats to Lands end.
