Link strengthened: A successful visit
The Three heAdTeAchers from Newton in sierra Leone are now safely back home after a busy 10 day visit. Most of their time was spent working in their link schools, Olney Infant, Lavendon and Olney Middle. They observed a range of lessons and talked to the children about life in sierra Leone.
They were impressed by the behaviour of our children, by the exciting ways lessons are taught and the use of technology. Mr Komba Nfalie learnt how children use flip cameras to record their work and then evaluate it by seeing it on the computer. This is in great contrast to Newton where the schools have no electricity and few resources. They commented on the emphasis of healthy eating in our society, as most of their meals
consist of rice and cassava.
We couldn’t let their visit pass without taking them to London for the day, where most of the sights were viewed from the upper deck of an open top tour bus. They were also keen to take a river cruise on the Thames. They had never seen snow before so we visited Xscape in Milton Keynes, where the staff allowed us to enter and let them hold some snow in their hands; they were very surprised by the cold temperature.
In Olney we showed them the Thursday market and visited the allotments where Mr and Mrs Bob hedges showed us around and talked about what they were growing. They also invited us to visit their workshop where Bob makes and repairs basketware. On the
sunday, Beatrice Usman and Fatmata sheriff joined the worshippers at st Peter and st Paul and Komba Nfalie worshipped at sutcliff Baptist church.
They have taken back many photos and memories of their visit and we look forward to further exchanges, so that our children can further understand and learn about what life is like in another country.
