54 Phonebox Magazine | January 2026LOCAL SPORT ROUNDUPOLNEY & CLIFTON FISHING CLUBHappy New Year to all of you.I hope all of you received the new fishing kit you hoped for. My last match resulted in me needing new elastics, floats, shot and olivettes. In other words my poor casting led to me repeatedly hooking a bush on the opposite bank so I had to award myself an early present. That match had been in the Bedford Winter league and the next match saw Olney%u2019s first overall team match win in just our third season. It is a team event but this season I must give special mention to Paul Hodgson who has taken his fishing to a higher level. The first perch & pike match of the season was fished at the Goosey and it was one of the most hotly contested matches in this series for a good while. Andrew Garner (pictured) ended up the winner by just 6 oz with good size pike being caught by most competitors but no large perch showing.Unfortunately it was a case of deja vu for the club%u2019s Christmas match as like last year the river was in flood so a postponement was decided upon. Hopefully I can give you results from the new date next month. When the river drops following a flood is often the best time to be on the bank and this was definitely the case for Nigel Bass (pictured) He went to Lavendon Mill and had two specimen bream and a beautiful tench amongst a mixed bag of fish.Next month we have our Christmas Match, another Tuesday Open and our Pike & Perch Match series gets underway.Until then, tight lines. Damon. After an incredible 40 years at the helm, Carole Wingate has handed over the running of the badminton club that plays at Lovat Hall in Newport Pagnell.Club members recently presented Carole with thank-you gifts.Although she%u2019s currently out of action following an operation, Carole will be back playing in 2026, once she%u2019s recovered from her knee surgery.Everyone at the club thanked Carole for all her years in charge, and everyone looks forward to seeing her back on court once she%u2019s fully fi t.The OBC presentation evening was held on Saturday 15th November at the Carlton House Club.Sixty three members and guests attended and were entertained during the evening by singer Phil Short. Club Competition presentations were made to the winners and runners-up of the One-Day events and the Club Championships.Over the winter period OBC play three away matches against Indoor clubs, the fi rst being against Bridgman on Saturday 6th December. The result was a very narrow win for Bridgmans by 42 points to 40. We go to Northampton in January. We wish all our members a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year. Fancy learning to play bowls?
