8 Phonebox Magazine | November 2025www.olneycameraclub.co.ukHere we showcase our 2025 image competitionwinning images. This was this year%u2019s third of four rounds; in the Olney Centre, judged by Naomi Saul. Below we reveal winners from a selection of our competition categories.%u201cOpen%u201d CategorySabre Wasp Egg Laying; by Roy Knowles;(Open = whatever image subject you like)The judge said, %u201cWell... amazing detail. Very often we shy away from insect photography, but here, the photographer has gone in really close. Whatever the insect is standing on is quite bright, but nevertheless it doesn%u2019t take away from the amazing detail on the beastie itself. You can clearly count the number of legs and antennae %u2013 there is a good range of tones captured, and the detail shown on this beastie works really well. A little bit of post-processing: reducing the brightness of certain areas might have helped, but it does not take away from the fact that the photographer has focused really well in macro on the subject; the eff ect is sharp. The background goes out of focus a bit, but this has been controlled. With macro there is little sense of scale.%u201d%u201cArtist at Work%u201d CategoryPortrayal of Botswana Male Lion; by Stephen Isherwood; The judge said, %u201cI think these pictures of artists at work, work well. Here I think the photographer has caught the feeling, the artist%u2019s work is mostly in focus %u2013 not fully, but nevertheless enough that we can see enough detail. I think you%u2019ve caught the side of his face well; I think it%u2019s good to have this profi le, lovely eyelashes, and you are defi nitely showing him at work. I have one small carp on this image: a light area %u2013 right at the edge on the corner; easily could be darkened down in post-processing, and I would have done that; but a great image overall.%u201dOlney Camera Club:Image Competition Round 3Next Meetings:Wednesday 19th November: New Member Evening. What an amazing sky!... It%u2019s made for photographers. Look at the way the S-curves go through that sky. Also, there is the simplicity of the fi eld, which balances the sky. It%u2019s got detail and a little bit of colour in it, but the picture is all about the sky. Lovely off set coppice. It%u2019s Winter time, so we can see through the branches. Just a few sheep on the right-hand side, to fi ll the picture and complete that side.%u201dWe thank the competition judge Naomi Saul for her excellent image critique. Congratulations to our competition winners.%u201cOpen%u201d Category %u201cArtist at Work%u201d CategoryLandscape Cup, %u201cOpen%u201d Category
