The nights are getting shorter and colder unless we are having another heatwave in which case it will be the fi fth of 2025. A heatwave is actually defi ned as at least three consecutive days of very hot weather where the temperature is at least 25%u00b0C for most of the UK but 28%u00b0C for London. That`s ok as a general rule but what are the rules at a place of work such as the CRMK studio? As such there is no law for minimum or maximum working temperatures, for example when it%u2019s too cold or too hot to work. That said, there is Government guidance suggesting a minimum of 16%u00b0C of 13%u00b0C if physical work is being undertaken indoors. Presenters at the studio needn`t worry about any of those temperatures as it is literally in their own hands as to what it is thanks to the air-conditioning unit we have in the studio. In the good times we managed to save up for an all singing and all dancing unit which cancelled out the need for portable heaters when it got a bit %u2018nippy%u2019 or leaving the door open. Presenters can now use the remote control to %u2018control%u2019 things! Before this technology was available to us, you were either too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter. Draughts from the metal security entrance door were an occasional blessing but in winter the opposite was the case. Regardless whether hot or cold, it makes no diff erence, its all about presenting a show and if that means multiple layers in the winter and the barest minimum in the summer then so be it.Air conditioning goes back to prehistory and up until the very early 20th Century, various %u2018primitive%u2019 methods have been used to try and regulate room temperature against the heat in particular. Wet reeds were used to cool the air in Ancient Egypt through evaporation. In 1736 a hand cranked %u2018blowing wheel%u2019 or as we might now call it, a fan was used in the House of Commons. In 1902 though, the fi rst practical electrical and mechanical air-conditioning unit was installed in an American printing plant. In warmer countries in Europe and in America, air conditioning units have been used for decades. Nowadays, their popularity in domestic situations in the UK is growing as temperatures rise and more consistent warmer weather is becoming the norm thanks to climate change.Heatwaves occur due to high pressure weather systems and the position of the jet-stream being north of the UK during the summer. In our cosy air-conditioned studio, we do not care what the weather is outside as we can present to our hearts content in favourable conditions. But, is it work? I guess that work goes into preparing and presenting a show but at the end of the day, it is a hobby, fun and that is how it should be.www.crmk.co.ukHeatwaves and Air-ConditionersCRMK RADIO
