Olney Allotment Holders Association approached Olney Town Council this summer with an idea to create a wildlife pond. This initiative preserves, protects and promotes the environment and encourages and expands the diversity of wildlife, so it seemed like a great idea. The Town Council were delighted to provide the funding through S106 contributions, and the Allotment Association, with a team of volunteers, created the wildlife pond. Debbie Whitworth was delighted to have been asked to the grand opening and sent us these pictures.The committee put in a huge amount of hard work, giving their time and eff ort using the materials which the Council supplied. Debbie commented: %u201cI%u2019m sure you%u2019ll agree it is an asset not just for those on the allotments but also to our town. I%u2019d like to thank again the committee and all those who helped to put this wonderful free event on for the town.%u201dThe pond opening event included a Dulcimer recital from local guitarist and composer Dan Evans, a wool craft sale, a tombola and raffl e, a free bug modelling workshop for the children and an extremely fun vegetable competition including %u2018Biggest Courgette%u2019 and %u2018Longest Bean%u2019. Allotment holder Jo had an intriguing collection of allotment fi nds (pictured left) that she has framed and was on display, all of which came from just her allotment!The pond is likely to attract a plethora of interesting wildlife, so if you fi nd yourself in the area, go and take a look and see what you can spot.
