Celebrating The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Hollie Cassidy from 10MRC gives us her report of the day’s proceedings: The day began with everyone gathering outside at 10am, buzzing with excitement due to the royal visit. The Year 7s and 8s were at the ready with their Duke of Edinburgh ags; the selected students dressed smartly with their dresses and suits, ready to greet Prince Edward. Multiple newspaper journalists and photographers were invited to join the school on this special day. Police of cers, who were there to act as security to the Prince, conversed with the anxious yet excited students, teaching them how to wave their ags the traditional way, as well as helping them to calm their nerves. The Mayor of Milton Keynes also joined us for this once in a lifetime event.
After a tense wait for his arrival, he pulled up at approximately 10:50am in an exquisite black Range Rover and was greeted with the cheers of the younger students, waving their ags proudly. On arrival, he met Mrs Carbert with a kind smile and a heartfelt handshake. Going along the line of people, he greeted them all generously and spoke to them keenly. Among this group were the Mayor, the head boy and girl, older students involved in the Duke of Edinburgh award and the school’s Duke of Edinburgh manager, Mr Stretton. He continued on to speak with the crowds of younger students who were ecstatic to be meeting the Earl of Wessex. He spoke with as many of the Year 7s and 8s as he was able, and one student recalled, in excitement, “It’s not every day you meet a prince!” Many of the students were visibly very emotional, some even shed tears!
He concluded his arrival by speaking with the student ambassadors and some other staff members and then greeted the remaining younger students. He continued on to the bungalow; Ousedale School’s designated Duke of Edinburgh award centre, before embarking on a tour of the school.
