MK Arts Centre
FoLiO; keeping our library at the heart of the community
From this month, Milton Keynes Arts Centre has launched its annual fundraiser auction with artist donations including those from Jeremy Deller, Ruth Ewan, Alan Kane and Rose Wylie. The Arts Centre has invited over
30 prominent contemporary artists and designers to each respond to a ceramic plate. These unique plates will be exhibited at the Arts Centre, in Parklands, Milton Keynes, from 19th March onwards, and this will be accompanied by a two-week live online auction, running from 19th March to 2nd April. The exhibition and online auction is part of Milton Keynes Arts Centre’s fundraising drive to help raise money to support their artist-led outreach programme, working with local communities who have little or no access to arts resources.
Poppy Sebire, trustee of the Arts Centre, says, “Milton Keynes Arts Centre has been going since 1974 and has improved thousands of peoples’ lives over the years since. We did the rst of these fundraisers in 2014, and the money it raised helped us replace a broken kiln and work with a local homeless charity on a project helping people living on the streets turn their lives around.” With last year’s auction proceeds, the Arts Centre was able to continue working with Open Door, a homeless charity in MK, and they secured funds for free workshops and events for children, young people and adults throughout the month of August. Raising the same amount of money this year will enable them to continue delivering specialist programmes to those with limited or no access to the arts. FoLiO was started by Olney community volunteers to assist adding value to Olney
Library on the High Street. We have all heard of public sector cuts and libraries have had budgets reduced. FoLiO volunteers are working with Milton Keynes Library and Olney Town Council to fund and keep our library at the heart of the Olney community.
We have had a few meetings to date and membership is growing steadily. Anyone can get involved from training to assist in the library running (book sorting, answering questions, book orders), reading corner,
fundraising, liaising with schools, partaking in events. One recent initiative is games and jigsaws at the library where you can request a game/jigsaw and play at one of the tables. We would welcome the Community suggesting what more it would like from Olney library and perhaps we, as FoLiO can accommodate. From the 1st April 2016 it is proposed the library will open for 21 hours per week.
This is your library and we would welcome your thoughts.
