London’s Burning
Continuing our “London’s Burning!” theme we have made maps of 17th century London and used our Roamers and Beebots to locate the source and spread of the Great
Fire. In music we have been practising singing the classic “London’s Burning” in rounds; and with help from Miss Henderson have practised our Fire and Flames dance and then performed it for our parents! We have been writing non- ction accounts of that historical period in 1666 and also used scienti c research to test the ammability of various different materials and discover why the buildings of that time were destroyed so quickly. We were thrilled to have a visit from the re ghters of Newport Pagnell Fire Station who showed us their very modern re engine which would have put the Great Fire out much faster; and then we designed and made our very own re engine models which we are very proud of.
In Forest Schools with Mrs Humphreys we used natural materials to explore the story of “Stick Man” by Julia Donaldson; and in our gardening/allotment lesson we have sowed broad beans and been recording their growth. We’ve been so busy but just about had time to watch the Olney Pancake Race and sample some pancakes made by Olivia’s daddy too!
Check out our new promotional video on our website at www.embertonschool.co.uk which shows how your child can receive a wonderful start to their education in a small rural school.

Bikeability
In January, 73 Year 5 & 6 children took part in Bikeability training. Over the one and half day course, the children learned the ABCD check, how to perform a U-turn, the primary and secondary positions in the road and how to turn left and right safely at different junctions. Some groups also learned how to cycle safely round a roundabout. Each child was awarded with a certi cate and a badge to show their con dence level as well as a high-visibility waistcoat, a ashing uorescent arm-band and a mini torch-light.
Hazard Alley
At the beginning of February, Year 5 visited the ‘Hazard Alley’ at the Safety Centre in Milton Keynes. In one session, they learned about staying safe while using the internet, creating raps to encourage other children to keep their personal details private. In the other session they visited the amazing scenarios to spot different dangers and learn how to deal with them. Amongst other things, they learned how to make a 999 call and how to put someone into the recovery position. For anyone who is interested in seeing the work of the Safety Centre for themselves, there is an Open Day on Sunday 24th July, with free entry. Year 5 can thoroughly recommend it!
The theme of online safety was reinforced on and around Safer Internet Day with special lesson activities and an assembly explaining strategies to help stay safe online.
