Dickens Day
Olney lOOked like london’s West end at January sales time. The weather showed a kindly face and attracted a huge turnout. Olney became a tight crush from end to end. if the crowd were a crush so were the stalls and this was a pity, it left no vantage point from which to enjoy an open scene.
Busy for sure but i found the scene less attractive than we are accustomed to. The organisation had suffered several misfortunes. The brave man in the harlequin suit on his monocycle was the only conspicuous member of the world of street entertainment. One or two other “usuals” were not with us this time. The reindeer had remained in lapland and the horse drawn bus had been ruled out by the previous days of intense chill and snow – it would have been cruel to ask the horses to serve us for half a day having been without proper exercise for so long.
We usually enjoy good fortune on all fronts but the law of averages reminds us not to take fortune for granted. in politically correct jargon lessons will be drawn. Where i’m accustomed to lots of fun all i perceived this time was a wild commercial jamboree. i’ve had some wonderful times down the years and surely the future will find further success. i hope that future sees the entertainers return and a little careful regulation of the high street fronts – there were far too many opportunist vending activities along the way. All found it seemed as if Christmas had been squeezed out. Sorry to be a damp squib but i just have to say how i felt on the day.

Olney ChAmBer Of Trade will be holding their first Business exhibition on Wednesday 2nd february 2011 from 2-8pm at Bridge house in Olney.
The event will be a great opportunity to meet potential customers and find out about the range of local businesses in the Olney and surrounding area. entry to the exhibition is free for visitors. Those attending the free event will have the chance to talk first hand to the exhibitors, attend workshops giving ideas for business development, and expand their network of contacts.
if you are a local business and would like to exhibit, sponsor the event and/or present a workshop, we (the Chamber) would like to hear from you. it costs just £75 for Chamber members to exhibit at the event, or £97 for non-members. if you are unable to attend the event but would still like to get involved, there are a number of sponsorship opportunities available from as little as £50.
We are promoting this event across Bucks, Beds and northants. By exhibiting at, or sponsoring the event, your business will gain exposure to visitors from all three counties, for less than the cost of an advert.
