Bi-centenary of Newport Pagnell’s bridges
with her award by Connie Hilton and Brian Hunt of the Bridges' Bi-centenary Committee, watched by Green Park Combined School head teacher Mrs Lynn
Budding artist Lauren Walls of Green Park Combined School, has won an art competition to show the Tickford Iron Bridge in its splendour on its 200th birthday. The competition, which was open to pupils of all four Newport Pagnell Combined schools received over 200 entries. Lauren was presented
Ackland and fellow pupils. Connie and Brian visited all four schools to make the children aware that the bridge, which many of them travel over every day, is really something rather special.
They also made awards to the other prizewinnners: Ryan Tanner (Tickford Park School), Maisie Youell (Cedars Combined School) and Lily Hallan (Portfields Combined School). Pupils at the combined schools each received an exclusive bookmark to commemorate the bi-centenary. The top 20 entries in the competition will be displayed at the exhibition in Newport Pagnell Library from September 7-21.
The art competition is just the start of celebrations to mark the bicentenary. The main day for the birthday event is scheduled for Saturday 18th September when a parade of historic vehicles will make their way from Lathbury heading over North Bridge and proceeding to Tickford Bridge. Leading the way will be an original stagecoach drawn by horses, taking us to the bygone era of 1810, long before the invention of the motor car. The other vehicles will depict decades from that date to the present day. The vehicles will then assemble to be admired in Riverside Meadow, where an old- fashioned funfair, displays, refreshments and entertainment will be taking place
