Little by Little...
Not everyone is in the fortunate position of having a lump sum that they are able to invest, in the hope of achieving a real increase in its value. One way of trying to rectify this is to save a small sum on a regular basis, in order to build up a larger sum, although many choose not to follow this avenue either.
Regular saving is not as popular as it should be and when looking for reasons behind this two of the most common we hear are that it hardly seems worth it for a small amount and that it will take forever to actually build it up to a worthwhile sum. This is an interesting view, in particular when you look back a generation when this view was perhaps not so prevalent.
My own first job in the industry was for Prudential, knocking on doors, collecting money on a monthly basis. Most families had been saving in that way since their parents started them up a policy when they were younger and many were pensioners who could remember their parents doing the same. This instilled in the children a need to save for things you may want in the future and I remember from my time with Prudential that many kids were rail-roaded into policies by their parents once they were earning. This may seem a little unfair but I would suggest very few were not grateful when they received the proceeds of their savings.
This generational attitude to saving does appear to be going but sadly it is probably in line with today's abundance of credit which seems to have eroded the savings culture and replaced it with a state of mind which leads to people feeling they should have things now, rather than saving and waiting.
Saving regularly though can be very rewarding and it is surprising how quickly time goes by and a few years of saving a relatively small amount each month can lead to a sizeable lump sum. One of the benefits of paying monthly is that ‘Pound Cost Averaging’ comes into play. Put simply, this means that if the market falls whilst you are paying in, you will buy more units each month because they are cheaper. When the market eventually rises again, you have many more units than you would have had, and this means you achieve a greater level of growth.
Could you afford to save a small regular amount, either for your own benefit or for that of your children/grandchildren? If so, why not contact Advison and see how we may be able to help you. Remember – initial meetings are always without cost or obligation.
