Dear Editor
Here we go again...
I had a strong sense of déja vu when reading Mr Trends’ letter in the April edition of Phonebox regarding his concern over various claims made in the local Liberal Democrats’ newsletter Focus, and Councillor Potts’ reply in your May edition.
Having recently come to Emberton from Norfolk, I have encountered very similar concerns before. Whilst I would not wish to bore Phonebox readers with details of disputes in another region, it might be worth bearing in mind some of the advice given to local Liberal Democrats by the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors:
Contained in their election manual entitled “Effective Opposition,” from which I quote:
Page 21 Page 23
Page 4 Page 6
“Be wicked, act shamelessly, stir endlessly.”
“Don’t be afraid to exaggerate. For example, responses to surveys and petitions are always ‘massive’. If a council is doing something badly public expressions are always of ‘outrage’.”
“Positive campaigning will NOT be enough.”
“You can secure support from voters who normally vote Tory by being effectively anti-Labour and similarly in a Tory area secure Labour votes by being anti-Tory.”
I find this kind of politicking deeply disheartening. It encourages the sort of ‘spin’ that causes people to take a cynical view of politics – to everyone’s loss, including sincere Liberal Democrats. I would therefore urge local Liberal Democrats to ignore the advice of the Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors and to engage in honest debates about the things that really matter to local people.
Kind regards Paul Hutchens
