Dear Editor
For once I find myself in agreement with the Liberal Democrats, and in particular with Cllr Sam Potts, that the Labour party is indeed dead in the water. Having let the City speculators run riot without regulation they have wrecked this country’s economic legacy and left us with generations of debt. The changes in demographics with the boundary shifts before the next election present the Conservatives with a challenge certainly, but the excellent track record of Mark Lancaster as constituency MP is second to none. That though, is where my agreement suddenly ends.
I’m puzzled then why Cllr Potts isn’t singing Mark’s praises as he has publicly admitted before now that he voted for him at the last General Election. The change he cries out for in his letter in the May edition of the Phonebox he was as responsible for as everyone else who voted for Mark in 2005. What I struggle to work out is, if his claims to have voted for Mark are true, whether he lacked the courage of his convictions back in 2005 to vote for a candidate from his own party or four years ago to support him once more. He asks us to decide whether we want “more of the same”, and I think judging from Mark’s track record that we rather do. After all, constituents want a supportive MP who puts his constituency before all else and as we have that, why would we want to change? Indeed if the Lib Dem Councillors are a yardstick by which to measure the efforts of their candidates we can hardly be inspired seeing as Emberton Parish Council had to write to the leader of the Council complaining at the lack of support and involvement from Cllr Potts, who is yet to attend an Annual General Meeting of the Parish Council since his election two years ago and his attendance at regular Parish Council meetings is hardly any better. His track record puts lie to his claim he is “representing the villages” as Emberton Parish Council have clearly not felt recently that he has done much to represent them.
Yours sincerely
Keith Fraser, Emberton
