In October Rev. Cheryl Slusser’s scheduled talk on Amish Life was tragically topical following the fatal shooting of several Amish
girls in Pennsylvania. The simple dignity displayed by the Amish in the aftermath of the atrocity was a lesson to us all. Rev. Slusser grew up near an Amish farming settlement and gave us an insight into their 19th century living. No electricity – paraffin lamps, no churches – home worship on a rota, no zips – buttons, no cameras – ‘craven images’, no taxes/pension – as they don’t use public services, no further education. Just a tight knit family bond that is so strong that when their children reach 18-21 they are encouraged to
‘sow their wild oats’ and 99% of them return to carry on the Amish traditions.
The AGM was held and the Committee Members were reinstated. The competition for ‘A Simple Candle Holder’ was won by Marion Stapleton.
In November John Lewis ‘Fashion Advisors’, Hannah Macphail and Mandy Francis, gave us a preview of what a personal fashion appointment with them would entail. This free service is open to everyone (men and women) who need help choosing an outfit for a special occasion, to plan a ‘capsule wardrobe’ or just to give their style a boost. Thankfully Hannah and Mandy were ‘real people’ not Trinny and Susannah wannabes at all and were soon initiating us into the secrets of ‘magic
knickers’, pashmina draping, how
to stand to look slim in
photographs and what to pack for
a weekend away (all essential information). I for one will definitely visit them in the future now I know how pleasant the experience will be.
The Competition for ‘An Evening Accessory’ was won by Elaine Hill and the evening closed with a general knowledge quiz.
December 12th was our Christmas meeting with Mulled Wine and Mince Pies, an exchange of gifts and a bumper raffle.
We meet at 7.30pm on every second Tuesday of each month at Brooklands Club, Ousebank Street, Newport Pagnell, visitors are welcome. n
