Souls of Olney
All makes servicing
Weston Underwood Fete
Sunday, 25th June 2006
While planning this years fete in Weston Underwood we came across some old documents in our archive. Weston has always prided itself in the traditional and classic air of the fete. An example of this is teas and cakes must be served in china cups and saucers and plates. With Stantonbury Brass on hand to entertain what could be better?
Looking back at the records we found that in 1927 we raised £102 six shillings and one penny. If that does not sound a lot then it works out to be £4,200 in today’s money. It seems the stalls that we are planning for this year are not new. Plants, cakes, second hand books and bottles all are mentioned in almost every fete through the years.
Safety issues mean old Weston Underwood favourites such as Clay Pigeon Shooting which raised £18 and seven shillings in 1958 have been dropped. No air rifles or darts and certainly no goldfish to win anymore.
In 1927 they planned 1000 visitors: where did they all come from? This year we are hoping for similar numbers. We have moved the location back to the village green and the meadows beyond to accommodate the success of the last few events.
Apart from all those traditional stalls and side shows we invite visitors to bring there dogs to enter into the Fun Dog Show. Various categories including ‘waggiest tail’ and dogs that look like their owner, glad I don’t judge that one!
Back by popular demand will be a display of local classic cars. This was a big success when they were on the green for St George’s Day.
I hope that you will have a chance to join us for a great family afternoon from 2pm. Alasdair Gibson
