Olney Tennis Club
MATCH UPDATE
Although the social tennis season is well underway, the match season is only now really getting going, with a mixed set of results in the opening matches. In the MK Tennis League Knock-out competitions, the Mens A team and Ladies C team got through their first round matches easily, Mens A with a walkover against Milton Keynes C and Ladies C with a convincing win away from home against Leighton Buzzard. Other teams still have their first round matches to play in the Knock-out. Mens A team also won their first match in the league proper against The Open University by 6 sets to 2.
In the local derby in Ladies Division 2 on 3 May, Olney Ladies B team beat the Ladies D
team 5 sets to 3. The match was played in the best of spirits and the players enjoyed themselves so much that a Ladies Doubles American tournament is being mooted, so they can play all over again!
Ladies A team on the other hand, probably do not want a rematch soon against their first opponents of the season, local rivals Gilpin, who won the match convincingly. The Mixed A team also lost their opening encounter with David Lloyd A, runners-up last summer in MKTL mixed division 1.
Our Mens team in the Bucks League are having a torrid start to the season. In their first match of the season against Aylesbury they came up against some highly skilled veterans who play for the English national
side and suffered a heavy loss. Our captain (Simon Barter) commented that it was quite an education. Worse was to follow in their second match against local side Milton Keynes, as two of their players were injured in the course of the match and had to be taken to A&E at Milton Keynes hospital, thus causing several sets to be forfeited and the match lost. The injuries seriously weaken the Bucks team squad and there will also be knock-on effects for other teams since the two injured players play for Mens A and B teams in the MK tennis leagues and one of them is also the Mixed team captain. We wish them both a speedy recovery.
DATES TO NOTE
An American tournament will be held on Sunday afternoon 11 June, organised by Lynda Baker (our American tournament expert). There will be places for maximum 20 players and you should advise Lynda as soon as possible if you intend to play, so she can organise the draw. There will be a small entry fee for the tournament – please only enter if you can commit to playing on the day.
Finals day is on Saturday afternoon 1 July – having granted a slight extension to the entry date, the draws for the various adult tournaments will be posted in the clubhouse shortly. The plan is to hold a barbecue on finals day to ensure the day is a social, as well as a tennis success.
Art and Craft Exhibition
and Sale
Carlton Village Hall
Saturday 8th July – 10am to 5pm Sunday 9th July – 1pm to 5pm
Once again, following the
success a few years ago of
a similar event, St Mary’s Church
in Carlton is holding a Grand Art
and Craft Exhibition on Saturday
and Sunday, 8th and 9th July at
Carlton Village Hall (the school
building off The Moor). The
Church committee has been
overwhelmed with support from
local artists, and craftspersons
from the whole region, and
anticipates that there will be a large number of original works for display, most of which will be for sale, making this an exhibition not to be missed. The event will run from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and 1pm to 5pm on Sunday.
Light refreshments will be available on both days, as well as a light lunch on the Saturday. d
