The current building certainly has an older core, an attractive new facade put on sometime in the late 1600s or early 1700s and some very interesting internal architectural features. %u201cIt is very likely there has been a house or shop on the spot since before 1206 as that is the fi rst record of a market being held,%u201d said museum trustee Amanda Molcher. The house, shop, gardens and gallery are now open for the 2025 season. Except for the hint of new paint smell and the new exhibitions, visitors will be unaware of the conservation work which was carried out during the winter close period. This year, a leak into Cowper%u2019s kitchen was located, damp plaster removed, walls dried out and smartly replastered. It was very interesting to see the history unveiled in the bricks and stonework. %u201cA crack in the ceiling of the Georgian Life Room was also investigated and repaired, revealing a good example of lath and plaster work,%u201d said Amanda. %u201cA little treasure was also discovered %u2013 a small piece of decorative wallpaper, date as yet unknown.%u201dThis year the Museum will have been open for 125 years. The next project will be to undertake work to the roof to protect both the collection and the building itself for years to come. Visiting the museum helps the trustees to fund necessary work. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday. More details: www.cowperandnewtonmuseum.org.uk.
