And the cake%u2019s good too.The Denton & District Gardening Club was formed in 2001. Originally the majority of members were from Denton village, but now three quarters come from the surrounding villages, Olney and Northampton. They meet in Denton Village Hall on a monthly basis, at 7.30pm on the second Monday of the month from September to June. The meetings start with any notices, then there%u2019s a visiting speaker to talk about a wide range of horticultural topics, ranging from vegetable gardening, pruning, propagation, planting and design to indoor plants. These last for about an hour, after which members can ask questions, followed by a horticulturally-themed raffl e. %u201cWe then fi nish with tea, coff ee and cake, which is very popular,%u201d says Margaret Pateman, club secretary. %u201cWe aim to go on an evening visit to a local garden and a longer outing further afi eld during July and August. We also have two shows a year.%u201dThe fi rst of these is held in March and is their Spring Flower Show. They have classes for many bulbs (both as cut fl owers and in pots) and for fl ower arrangements. There is a class for everything. %u201cIt really is an uplifting sight to see the array of various blooms, and the scent is gorgeous,%u201d says Margaret. %u201cIt is an open show, so anyone can enter and entries can be made on the day. %u201cWe also have a Flower and Produce Show in September which combines classes for baked goods, flowers and vegetables. At both events we have a raffl e, plant stall and home-made refreshments.%u201dThe club%u2019s members range from complete beginners to very experienced gardeners, but no-one needs to worry about being quizzed to fi nd the extent of their gardening knowledge %u2013 meetings are relaxed, and friendly and visitors are welcome.Denton & District Gardening Club meet once a month at Denton Village Hall from September to June.
