36 Phonebox Magazine | February 2025A Quiet Period this Month %u2013 Time for a Bit of %u2018Rest and Recuperation%u2019February is a bit of a quiet period for us %u2013 as we recover from our eff orts over the Christmas period.Thank you again to our Friends Group, fellow Lions, local businesses, retailers and other helpers for their marvellous support over the very busy winter period. Also, a special thanks to the good folks of Olney and Newport Pagnell for their whole-hearted and kind support too.FUND RAISINGTown CalendarsIn addition to the sales through our friends in Retail, we also held two %u2018pop up%u2019 stalls, one in Olney and one in Newport Pagnell. In Olney we sold around 25 calendars %u2013 and received around %u00a320 in donations. In Newport Pagnell we sold around 20 calendars and had some fabulous donations too, from the generous folks of Newport Pagnell. We still have some calendars left. In Olney, they are on sale in Teapots, the Cowper & Newton Museum, the Little Coff ee Pot, Olney Pancake Parlour and Allen%u2019s of Olney. In Newport Pagnell, they are on sale in Newport News, HBB Cards & Telephones, Tickford Card Box, Caf%u00e9 Latte, Annie%u2019s Tea Rooms, Herons Opticians, Methodist Caf%u00e9, Cake Secret and D%u2019oro24. Thank you to all these retailers %u2013 we really appreciate your help.Quiz Night at the SwanWe%u2019re delighted to be back at The Swan on the 24th February to participate in the charity quiz. Last year, the event raised over %u00a3800 for us on the night %u2013 which was price-matched by Lindsay Carter from HCB Solicitors %u2013 making %u00a31,600 in total. This is a really fabulous result for us.. Thank you so much to them. We%u2019re very much hoping for a similar result this year.Lions Motorama 2025We are at the planning stage for this year%u2019s Motorama event %u2013 planned for Sunday 8th June. Again, we look forward to the massive help and support, (in terms of vehicles and personnel), we get from the Olney Classic Car Club, other Lions Clubs and our Friends.DONATIONSDonation to Ukrainian Stove AppealWe have received an urgent appeal to support the Lions District Ukraine Stoves project, designed to help those in need during the cold winter months. Lions and Lions Clubs have already generously donated over %u00a355,500, enabling 433 stoves to be manufactured, shipped and distributed to the people of Ukraine with love from the Lions of Multiple District 105.Donation to Newport Pagnell ScoutsNewport Pagnell Scouts have planned an educational visit to war cemeteries %u2013 and also to go to the %u2018Ypres Experience%u2019 %u2013 providing background and education regarding WW1. The Scouts are seeking support to help fund the trip. It was agreed in principle to off er %u00a3300.00 and to seek feedback on how the money will be spent %u2013 and to ask them for a presentation %u2013 by some of the delegates %u2013 to the club to talk about their experiences.SERVICE ACTIVITIESSpecs RecyclingIn addition to our other recycling projects, we also collect pairs of old specs for recycling / re-purposing, from our various collection points in Olney and Newport Pagnell. A special thanks this month goes to Specsavers in Newport Pagnell who collected two huge boxes for us %u2013 and to Punch Opticians in Olney who also collected a similarly large quantity.Newport Pagnell & Olney LionsChoral Event in Newport PagnellIt was a pleasure to attend the recent choral at the St Peter and St Paul Church in Newport Pagnell. The event was in aid of Ukraine Appeal MK and the Chernobyl Relief Fund. The church was packed. The TGI Choir were excellent (as usual); the Ukrainian singers did some beautiful songs and looked fantastic %u2013 and there was some virtuoso organ playing too. Our Lion Tatiana gave an emotional and stirring speech to the excited audience.MEETINGS AND SOCIALSAppearance on Stony RadioWe were invited to have a bit of an informal chat on Stony Radio, by presenter Thia Cooper, on her %u2018Chatty Charity Show%u2019. We spoke about Lions, what we did, who we supported %u2013 and what we needed. Thank you for inviting us on, Thia.
