But in some far-off places the festivities were connected to the land or astronomical events. In Egypt the beginning of the year coincided with when the River Nile fl ooded, normally when the star Sirius rose. Ancient Persians started their New Year at the spring equinox, in March, when the Sun shone directly on the equator and the length of the night and the day were the same. The city of Babylon in ancient Mesopotamia was where the fi rst New Year%u2019s celebrations were recorded about 4000 years ago. The tradition of making a New Year%u2019s Resolution as the clock striking midnight heralds a new era, is more common in the western hemisphere where we live.
