                                    January 2025 | Phonebox Magazine 57Olney WI update %u2013 Sea Shanties, Reindeer and LunchFreddie%u2019s Barnet entertained Olney WI at their December meeting with lots of foot tapping and hand clapping!%u00a0We had a bumper raffl e, a potluck supper, and Jo Smith won the competition, something red.At the Christmas Tree Festival held in the church, our Craft Groups decorated our tree.It was full of pom-pom reindeers, made by our members.%u00a0After the tree was dismantled, the reindeer were donated to the Harry%u2019s Rainbow charity to give to bereaved children.Christmas lunch was at the Swan Inn and 29 of us enjoyed their usual delicious fayre.Olney Bowling ClubAnother bowling year has been and gone with some crazy weather to contend with. From playing during the hottest day of the year to a storm with lightning, thunder and rain that fl ooded the rinks. During 2024 I recorded thirty-nine wins and only twentyone losses during competitive games. The Willen Hospice have benefi tted from doubled donations It%u2019s good news for car fans as Motorama rolls in to town in 2025points tally amounted to 1980 winning points to 1,270 losing, so another successful year.Against strong opposition Mike Richardson was awarded Greenkeeper of the Year 2024 by Buckinghamshire Bowls Association. The motor extravaganza will take place as before, in Olney%u2019s Market Place. More details will be announced in due course. The event will be brought to the town with the help of Olney Classic Car Club and Newport Pagnell and Olney Lions. During World War Two, she worked at Salmons and Sons (coachbuilders) which made armaments for the war eff ort. She later worked as a %u2018dinner lady%u2019 at Cedars and Ousedale schools.Doll was a keen athlete in her younger days, specialising in the 100-yard sprint, hurdles, and the high jump. Later, she took up ballroom and sequence dancing at Lovat Hall before fi nally giving up at the age of 82!Doll%u2019s been going to The Brooklands Centre for two-and-a-half years. She also attends an exercise group there on Thursdays and a monthly lunch, plus a bingo club elsewhere in the town and the monthly Food For Thought lunch at the Baptist Church.She loves the company at The Brooklands Centre, has made some great friends there, and thinks the volunteers are marvellous.Doll had a wonderful day %u2018on cloud nine%u2019 and received lots of cards, gifts, and a special cake.Newport Pagnell born and bred Doll Tripp recently celebrated her 100th birthday with friends at the Wednesday Day Club at The Brooklands Centre in Newport Pagnell.Newport born Brooklands member reaches 100When asked what the secret of reaching 100 was, she replied: %u201cTake each day as it comes. Don%u2019t sit in your chair and say you can%u2019t do it. Get up and keep going!%u201dThe Brooklands Centre off ers food, fun and friends for the over 55s.
