The Game Of Bridge
he card game of Bridge is a game for four players and belongs to the whist family of games. Two players in partnership play against two others also in partnership. The players are described by the four points of the compass
with North/South playing against East/West, with partners sitting opposite each other. It is a game of great skill (having a good memory is de nitely an asset) and a little bit of luck. It is a game played by millions throughout the world.
Bridge can be as relaxed as you want. You don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the game It is an intellectual game and many players make efforts to improve and develop their game to the limit of their own ability. The best way to learn the game is to go to a bridge class. These are run by various organisations. When you have obtained a good knowledge of the game, your teacher may suggest that you join a club.
Many clubs will play what is known as duplicate bridge. This is where the cards are pre-dealt and presented to the players in a “board”. The cards are played by the four players at a table. At the end of that game the cards are replaced into the same positions in the board and the same cards are then played by four new players. At the end of a club session the points for each pair of players are calculated. This can be done manually but many clubs now have machines which do this electronically.
Olney Bridge Club with the help of Milton Keynes Community Foundation has recently purchased machines for electronic scoring. Olney Bridge Club meets weekly on a Monday evening at The Olney Centre. We ask that players arrive at 7.20pm at the latest for a 7.30pm start. New members and visitors are welcome.
