A Month to Remember
The month of November is a time to remember. Some people will remember the 5th November and the gun powder plot and the fun of fireworks, for others it is the month to remember the fallen. To remember all the men and women injured or killed in conflict.
Remembrance Sunday
Many people will remember the fallen by wearing their Royal British Legion poppy. Some will watch the Remembrance Day Parade in London on the TV. Can I suggest you come and watch the Newport Pagnell Remembrance Day Parade on Sunday 10th November?
Wearing my ‘Major McCall’ hat I have the honour of commanding the Remembrance Day Parade. The parade forms up in Queens Avenue at 10.30am and marches along the High Street to be in place outside the War Memorial at the Parish Church for the Act of Remembrance at 10.45am and 2 minutes silence at 11am. The Last Post and Reveille are sounded by Brosley Brass.
On parade, as well as the Royal British Legion, will be the Rifles, the Royal Green jackets Association, various other associations, and cadet and youth groups. The salute will be taken by the Royal British Legion County Chairman, Mike Barry (a Newport Pagnell resident), the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Mr Alexander Boswell, the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Brian White and the Mayor of Newport Pagnell, Cllr John Smith.
11:11:11 Armistice Day
In addition there is a small Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial on Armistice Day itself, 11th November, between 10.45am and 11am.
Newport Pagnell Royal
British Legion Club
I have the great honour of being the President of the Newport Pagnell Royal British Legion Club. Members not only help to raise money for the Poppy Appeal, but also have a good time socialising at the RBL Club. Many people think you have to be an ex-serviceman or woman to join the RBL, but the rules changed some years ago so anyone can join. So, if you support the aims of the RBL and would like the opportunity of a friendly chat over a cheap pint, attend a social event or quiz night, why not come along to the RBL, the last building on the right hand side in the High Street on the road to Northampton.
Christmas Lights Switch On
The other big event in the town’s calendar in November is the Christmas Lights. The official ‘switch on’ being on the last Saturday in November with an all day fair in the High Street.
A big ‘thank you’ to all the Christmas Lights volunteers who make it happen, and let’s hope it is dry this year!
