NEWPORT PAGNELL
Mead Centre Development
We are delighted to announce that the Church Hall has recently been renamed The Mead Centre. This is in thanks for a legacy left by Gordon and Glenys Mead which is enabling us to begin our recent considerations about developing this building.
The hall was built in 1926 as a school room for the Sunday school of the Congregational Church and has a central hall with break off rooms. In the 1960’s a toilet block was added and the heating was upgraded in the 1980’s, but there is no insulation in the walls or roof. The building is now dated and cold in the winter and requires investment to raise it to the standards expected nowadays. It is however a good space with many positive points and has huge potential and scope.
The Church has begun to seek the views of the community about what is needed locally as, if there is going to be major work on the hall, it needs to be suited to the potential users’ requirements. Newport Pagnell United Reformed Church has as its mission statement: ‘At the Centre of the Town, at the Heart of the Community’. Everything the Church does is measured against this. The buildings are positioned in the centre of the town, and we ask ourselves how we can make sure that our actions, events and engagement with the local community fits in with this statement as we live out our faith in God who calls us
to share the Gospel message of love, peace, joy and hope with those we meet. In seeking the views of the community we have conducted a Survey Monkey and recently held two Open Days. On Friday 27th and Saturday 28th September we opened the hall and had displays of possible options, displays from current users and there were presentations about the Church redevelopment and the possibilities for the Mead Centre. Many local people came in and talked to us and on the Saturday the parents from both our Toddler and Early Bird worship ran a range of activities for children and provided refreshments. The plans include basic refurbishment, complete refurbishment or rebuild.
This is a significant project for the church but we have experience behind us of the Church building refurbishment which was finished in 2006. The Church building, once used just for Sunday worship, is now used most days for a variety of activities.
This is an exciting time for us as we feel there is a need for this building to be upgraded and we are providing an opportunity for local groups, organizations and individuals to have a part in helping us develop this space for the whole town.
