Emberton Pull together
In 1976 a steering Committee formed by the Emberton Parish Council raised grants to purchase what is now Emberton Playing Field. In 1980 after problems mowing the field Dennis Letts put forward the suggestion that if he had restored the 24 year old tractor belonging to Ken Fairey, he would then ask him if it could be used on the field. Ken readily agreed to loan out his tractor.
In 1982 Ken generously gave the tractor to Emberton Playing Field Committee. Now 32 years later the McCormick International Tractor no longer meets modern Health and Safety regulations and it was retired, unlike Dennis who is still going.
With generous help from Emberon Parish Council and Emberton United Charities and funds from their own resources, Emberton Playing Field committee purchased a new Iseki Tractor.
In recognition of keeping the old tractor going it was gifted to Dennis Letts, who will lovingly restore it.
The handover ceremony was witnessed by a good assembly in the Pavilion on Saturday 4th February. The pavilion and the Playing Field are available for hire for all functions, large and small.

Meet local businesses and make new contacts at
Olney Chamber’s annual business event
Would you like to find out about the wide range of local businesses in Olney and the surrounding area? Are you looking to meet potential customers or make some new business contacts? Then come along to Olney Chamber of Trade’s annual business exhibition on Wednesday 14th March, at the Carlton House Club in Olney.
The exhibition will take place between 2pm and 6.30pm in the Carlton House Club’s function room. Olney Chamber’s regular monthly networking event will also run from 12 noon until the exhibition begins at 2pm.
It costs just £75 for Chamber members to exhibit at the event, or £97 for non-members. Spaces are limited and we will restrict stands to a maximum of two per business category so visitors meet a wide range of businesses. There are also a number of sponsorship opportunities available from as little as £60.
For more information about the exhibition, please contact Steve Axtell on 0788976314 or visit www.olneychamberof trade.co.uk.
NEWPORT PAGNELL WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
As spring is creeping slowly towards us, our February meeting featured gardening. Maria Greenhill, who runs her own garden design company, advised us how to ‘Lighten the Load’, with an illustrated talk.
Maria said she had often been asked for low maintenance solutions by people who don’t actually like gardening themselves, or those with busy working lives which leave no time for weeding or tying-in, or all those other jobs needed to keep the garden in good order.
It is important to check your soil type and the amount of sun/shade so the plants you do buy won’t die because they don’t like the conditions. Also, avoid things that need frequent watering and which need tying-in as they grow. Use of a pergola or trellis can be a help in this respect. Consider the eventual size of plants so they won’t be too big for the space available, and use ground cover to reduce the need for weeding. Maria advised us to try the ‘Chelsea Chop’ where you cut back perennials in the week of the Chelsea Flower Show in order to prolong their productive period. Use of evergreens and repeat planting also reduce the workload and raised beds can be helpful for those less agile. We saw some of Maria’s own garden designs, and ideas for colour combinations and contrasts. This was a very informative illustrated talk which gave us all food for thought for the coming months in the garden.
The competition (letter C) was won by Marion Stapleton with a beautiful cross-stitch picture, second Angela Hancox with an old camera, and third Celia Boyer with a decorative cake flower.
The raffle was won by Angela Hancox, second Marion Stapleton.
We were pleased to welcome three guests to this meeting, one of whom joined immediately, and we hope the other ladies will follow suit next time.
Newport Pagnell Women’s Institute meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Royal British Legion Club, and is always delighted to welcome new members. In March we are due to have a visit from Waitrose to tell us about their wine and cheese selections. For further information please call Evelyn Mison on 01908 615630.
