Hear ye Thumbsticks all - a fine finish
During a delicious breakfast on the December advent walk in Emberton, Philip Smith announced that after more than thirty years of leading the Sherington Thumbstick walks (an event that he had started), he had decided to retire from leading said walks.
Once over the initial shock those present immediately elected him life president of the Thumbstick walks he had created, and it was agreed that the leading of the walks would be shared between four of the regular walkers at the breakfast for a trial period and also anybody else who may have a walk that they wished to share.
On Sunday February 5th Philip set off through the snow from the Knoll at 10 am with forty fellow walkers, to lead us across some of the paths and fields that he has known and loved all his life. The ultimate destination was the White Hart where hot snacks and soup were waiting, not only for those who had walked but other well wishers from the past and present, to help Philip celebrate the great success of the walks that he had started all those years before.
A celebratory bottle of special “Walkers” whisky with personalised labels and a signed card were presented to Philip as an expression of our thanks to him, and a poem was read remembering the Thumbstick barbecues.
We hope that Philip will continue to join the walks whenever he wishes. Onwards and upwards.
