Yardley Hastings Primary School
Class 4 Visit to the Olympic Park
WE SET OFF with great excitement on Monday 23rd May for our visit to the Olympic park in London. We realised that we were very privileged to be given this opportunity but didn’t quite know what to expect!
Our tour started with the stadium itself which surprised us all by not being as big as we were expecting. It was completely finished even down to covers on the seats and we were allowed to drive down the 100m track that usain Bolt was going to run the next day when he visited. We were fascinated to find that the stadium had been made from surplus oil pipes and that there is a warm up track hidden underneath the tiers of seats!
The Veladrome was perhaps our favourite, a beautiful wooden structure that required 90,000 nails in the flooring alone. The swimming pool has two extra wings for spectators which will be removed after the Olympics and has a beautiful wave shaped roof supported by three struts only.
We saw the village which will house 50,000 officials and athletes and found out that after the event all the flats will have kitchens fitted and be sold off for housing. In fact half have already been sold and a school built for the children that will live there.
The enormity of the project was difficult to comprehend – 60 businesses were re-housed and factories demolished and rebuilt, pylons were taken down and cabling laid underground, a new train station built, a lock built and a river cleaned. As well as hundreds of acres set out as park land. Even 400 wild cats had to be rescued and re-homed! A very special day.
