OLNEY BOWLS CLUB
RECREATION GROUND (Behind Football Club) OPEN DAY – SUNDAY 8 MAY 2011 2pm
afTer aNoTher wINTer of hard graft for the dedicated team of bowlers, the clubhouse has undergone the final part of its transformation.
They have created more space in the dining and bar areas. Gone are the arches, now square piers support the roof sections. The floor has a new screed over which new carpeting has been laid.
The bar area will hopefully have some new furniture in the near future. a smoking shelter has been erected for those who must.
Now perhaps the good omens of last year might prevail again, as we had players who qualified for the National Championships after last year’s renovations. who knows!!!
apart from that our clubhouse and green have probably the best facilities in Bucks. so if you have ever thought about playing bowls why not come and join us at our opeN daY on sunday 8th May starting at 2pm. Bowls will be provided, but please bring a pair of flat soled shoes.

Democracy is for Everyone Everyday
Upwards of half our people live with the idea that getting to the polls is the sum total of their involvement, that nothing more is required. This is very far from the truth. once we have elected our representatives we are free at any time to advise them of our wishes and preferences. The elected representative has a heavy responsibility to listen to us, and furthermore he has a conscious need to be kept up to date with the spirit of his constituency. such is the situation at parish council as surely as at town, borough, county council or parliamentary level.
It may be tempting to suppose that you didn’t get a very encouraging hearing from that man who evidently thinks otherwise, but he may also be hearing the same from others. Your little concern may be just one ripple among many but if there are no ripples there will be no storm. If people everywhere keep pressing forward with our beliefs the pressure is bound eventually to reach as far as is required to result in action and decision. our representatives are open to us at all levels. The sure fire way for a man to lose his place in parliament is to be deaf to his constituents. In my own part of the country a little more than ten years ago just that happened, he was of my party but I and hundreds of others could not bring ourselves to vote for him – yes, even safe seats can be lost.
It astonishes me that so few people care sufficiently to watch over the management of our own concerns by sitting betimes in the public gallery to see who is saying what. parish and town council meetings only too often proceed with no one apparently interested. This is crazy, their decisions may very well affect our lives within weeks of the meeting. at a meeting of the Newport pagnell town council I was the only listener and I don’t even live in the town. I’ve promised they’ll be lonely no more but surely some of their own people should come along besides.
The democratic process regulates much of our lives in every day. It proceeds more surely and smoothly when we all play our part; that part is open to us every day, five minutes in a polling booth is only the tip of the iceberg. If you sow seeds in your garden then surely you must think to keep them watered. our hopes and ideas are like those seeds so they progress if we cultivate them. GB
