With the new year come resolutions to get fit, lose weight or take up a new hobby. But is it time to get in control of your finances? At Jane Smith Financial Planning we thought that a few helpful tips might help you on your way:
• Identify your goals, cost them with timescales and have a clear idea of your priorities. You have something clear to aim for.
• Draw up a budget and stick to it. Identify ways to make savings or increase your income.
• Borrow only what you really need, and work out a plan to pay off your debt, tackling the high interest debts first.
• Use a deposit account to save for an emergency fund or ‘cash cushion’ of at least 2-3 month’s income. This will help cover you for emergencies such as if your car breaks down or you lose your job.
• Start saving on a monthly basis for your shorter and medium term goals.
• Protect yourself and your assets against unforeseen events. Make sure you and your family have the right amount of cover as otherwise your finances – and your life - could easily be derailed. Also think about having in place a will and a Lasting Power of Attorney.
• Make a plan for your retirement. Even if you still have debt, seriously consider it, especially if your employer will make a contribution too.
• Investments open up opportunities to make your money work harder for you over the long-term, and there could be tax-savings available too.
