Fundraising at the United Reformed Church
The United Reformed Church would like to thank everyone who helped to make both our recent fundraising events, the Salvation Army Band Concert and the Cheese & Wine evening, such great evenings. Both were enjoyed greatly by all who came and the Elders and Congregation very much appreciate the support given to our efforts to raise £20,000. The two events raised over £1,000. Our grateful thanks go to the Milton Keynes Salvation Army Band and Mr Phil Smith for organising the band concert. Also thanks to The Bolivian Sunshine Dogs who created a great atmosphere with their fantastic music at the Cheese & Wine evening. Our next event (yes, we haven't reached the £20.000 yet!) will be yummy homemade soup served at Dickens of a Christmas, so please pop in and see us when your feet need a rest!!

Bellringing in Olney Parish Church
Further ringing progress has been made last month with one of our young ringers, Sophie Wood, ringing for Sunday service for the first time on 17th October. We now have an increasing number of ringers able to take their place for this very important function of calling the citizens of Olney to Divine Worship.
At practice on Mondays we have very good attendance of our home band but always attract a number of very welcome visitors who are invaluable in assisting the newer ringers’ efforts to learn new methods. At a recent practice night this snap was taken. Pictured (from left to right) are Jill Wiseman, Ella Sheaf, Alison Wiseman (kneeling), Matt Sheaf, Helen Dilley, Sophie Wood, Ruth Plackett, Graham Dilley, Sheila Ware, Rosie Haskell, Gareth Wiseman, Liz Sheaf, Bethany Heron, Charles Knight (Tower Captain) and Alan Marchbank (Ringing Master). All are welcome to join us at practice to try out bell ringing for themselves. It costs nothing, is very good exercise (just climbing the stairs is a work-out in itself) and the atmosphere is very sociable.
To find out more about us please go to our web-site www.olneybells.com where you can find our news and plans and contact details if you want to get in touch.
Planned Ringing in October 2010
On Saturday 16th October a Band from the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers achieved a Peal of London Surprise Royal. This is one of the more challenging bellringing methods and is quite an achievement. It took about 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete and involved some 5000 changes in the ringing order of the bells. Congratulations to them for a very accomplished piece of work.
During the evening of Wednesday, 20 October the bells were rung to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Girl Guide
Movement. The significance of the event was that the celebration took place at 20:10 on 20/10/2010.
It is also planned that a Band from Hanslope will ring a Quarter Peal before Evensong on Sunday, 24th October. They will start at about 4pm and the planned ringing will last for around 45 minutes.
We also have two more weddings to celebrate this month – the marriage of Tom Collins to Jessica Askew on 23rd October and the marriage of Ian McGrane to Sarah Brame on 30th October. Our good wishes go to both couples and we look forward to being a small part of their special days.
Forthcoming ringing in November
The 14th November is Remembrance Sunday and the bells will be rung, half muffled, before the Act of Worship at the War Memorial in Market Place Olney. Ringing will be from around 10.25 and finish so that the Church Clock will chime 11 to announce the silent memorial to the fallen.
On 20th November 2010, starting at around 10.00am, a team representing the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths will be attempting a peal as part of their annual Peal Weekend. The Society was formed over 260 years ago and is an international organisation. Both David Phillipson (our previous Ringing Master, now working in Australia) and Alan Marchbank, our current Ringing Master, are members of this society and last year David rang in a similar peal here. Alan has a rope in this years’ attempt.
