Minister’s Letter
Promises, promises...
As I write this letter the country, if we believe the media, is gripped by election fever. Every day we seem to be bombarded with politicians making promises of what they will do for us and the country if we will give them our votes.
For whatever reason, I do not seem to have caught election fever; I don’t even have an election temperature!
My mother-in-law is currently undergoing treatment for a serious illness and her consultant has promised her that she will feel better once the treatment has been completed. However, she has already suffered a setback in the planned course of treatment. I am left wondering how much faith I can place in the promises of the consultant and indeed in the promises of the politicians.
In the Christian calendar we have recently celebrated Easter and we now look forward to the feast of the Ascension. When I think of the Ascension of Our Lord, the promise Jesus made to his apostles, the promise he made to us, comes to mind – I am with you always, yes to the end of time (Mt28:20)
In the difficult times of my life, I have found this promise to be a source of great comfort. In the joyful moments, I have found this promise to be a prompt to give thanks.
For many of us, there are testing times ahead. Some of us may have children facing exams; some may be leaving school and looking for work. Perhaps we face uncertainties at work – even the threat of redundancy.
The good news is whatever we face, we are not alone. I am with you always, yes to the end of time.
Now that IS a promise.
