News from New City Photographic Society
‘1.59’ by Jon Anderson
IT IS NOT often that the work of one of our members wins both the print and the projected image sections of one of our monthly competitions. Congratulations go to Jon Anderson for his images 'Threadneedle' and '1.59' which did just that with the set subject of 'Tiny'.
Our judge, Don Byatt, enjoyed the bird-like quality of the gauge as it appears to peck at the grains of rice being measured and the lighting on both the needle and thread seemed to be just right in the simple image of threading a needle.
The variety of ideas captured in this competition ranged around really close macro photography, some striking natural history pictures, some 'photoshopped' fun and impressive land and seascapes with comparatively tiny people enjoying the outdoors.
Visitors and prospective new members are always welcome at our meetings.
Our website www.newcityps.co.uk gives programme details and a ‘contact us’ link.
A Story from New City Photographic Society
‘Threadneedle’ by Jon Anderson
ONCE UPON A Saga Holiday a new story began. While travelling through Nepal a chance meeting with a young Nepali man resulted in the tourists making an unscheduled visit to the village of Battidanda. They were taken to see the school. Gradually it became clear that not all the children of the village went to school, fees were charged and those with no money were excluded. The fees, in turn, paid the rent for the school building leaving little to spend on classroom improvements.
Two of the Saga travellers that day asked how they could help, what was needed? Irene and Peter Clarke did not expect to be told a new school was what was needed, but now, thanks to their tireless fund raising, a new school exists. A substantial brick build, two storey school which all the 200+ local children attend.
