Grange
The League of Friends of Paganell Grange would like to thank all readers who so generously supported our Garden Party on 22nd August, which raised £446 for the residents of the newly-renamed Westbury Grange. Our next event will be a film show by the Newport Pioneers which will be held in Westbury Grange on Westbury Lane, Newport Pagnell on Saturday 24th October, starting at 7.30pm. This promises to be a great evening so anyone wanting tickets, which are only £4 each, should contact Roy Read on 01908 616523.
Sophia replied that this was not necessarily the case, since visitors to Bedford on the ‘Bunyan trail’ might pick up a leaflet and come to Olney, for example. John Sharp asked why OTC should be expected to subsidise her commercial operation. Sophia replied that although the idea for the project had come about whilst preparing to market the holiday cottage that she owns in Olney the two were not related and it became obvious, she said, that there was no easily accessible source of information about the town. In response to Paul Watson’s preference for the existing Olney Official Guide Mike Hughes said he thought it was too big. Rachael Passee said she liked the idea of a leaflet but suggested that the businesses, as main beneficiaries, should finance it. Debbie Brock proposed and Steve Clark seconded a vote on each of the three requests, resulting in agreement to the web link from the OTC, deferment of a decision on quoting for the OTC website and a rejection of the grant application for £1500 by a substantial majority.
Olney Health Check
David Rumens stated that he had detected ‘Negative Vibes’ coming from members of the council in taking forward the recommendations of the Health Check that was completed by the townsfolk of Olney over a period of several months in 2007. He explained that the final report had never been published and the crash of a computer containing the source data had resulted in
much of it being lost. Around 75% of the data had been recovered, he said, and he would be meeting with some of the leaders of the Health Check to see how it could be progressed. Steve Clark said that the council were minded to approve the formation of an Olney Partnership.
Continental Market
As reported last month, the council had received a request for a Continental Market to be held in Olney. It had caused much discussion with some members speaking vehemently against the proposal, so it was agreed that a small working group would look into the subject further. Tony Evans reported that this had happened but it now turned out that the market was now fully booked elsewhere and would not be able to come to Olney this year. It will be visiting Newport Pagnell from October 2nd to the 4th, for those that want to experience a taste of the continent.
Blackmail Corner
The license for weddings in the Olney Centre is due for renewal and it was agreed to do so, prompting one member who shall remain nameless to mutter that he/she did not believe in marriage. A large bribe in a wee plain envelope posted through the letterbox of The Phonebox office should ensure that they remain anonymous!
The next meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Monday 5th October in the Council Chamber in The Olney Centre. Members of the public are always welcome to attend and, if they wish, speak at the start of the meeting, or at any point that the mayor decides is appropriate.
