Mini Olympics for Olney Runners
So it wasn’t quite Beijing but members of Olney Runners showed just as much determination and level of commitment as they entered the starting blocks for their own mini Olympics experience.
All members entered three track events ranging from 100m right through to 3000m. There were ten races in all and would it be wise to enter short distances, middle distance or just ignore the 3000m completely time would tell.
The 800m was a keenly fought race with some unusual race techniques and produced three new club records; Jonti Heap took the junior record previously held by his brother Zin Zan in a great time of 3:07.
In the 400m Zin Zan Heap made his
own mark by beating his own junior
record flying home in 1:19. (Zin Zan
also breaking his own 200m record finishing in 35seconds.) Amanda Brear took the ladies vet record coming in 1:16 and Henry showed everybody how it should be done with a remarkable 59 seconds.
The clouds were getting darker as the 3000m runners set off, many on tired legs after their earlier events. A new ladies record for Bernice Randall in 12:51, a new men’s record by Kevin Minter storming home in 10:56 and Jonti Heap finishing in 14:16 for the junior record.
Twenty three ORs took part and the overall leader board changed places throughout the night. But the overall Victor Ludorum went to Mike Smith storming into first place by half a point with a total of 23.5 points.
