Lavendon Village Annual Show
On September 13, 2008, the Lavendon Village Annual Flower, Vegetable, Fruit and Handicraft Show extended its run into its 65th year and there is no prospect of it retiring yet.
Seventy three exhibitors submitted over 339 entries spread over 106 classes. Most people entered just one exhibit, but Fred Welsh entered 26! We missed Harold Battison due to him having a hip operation as he put in 22 entries last year and won the Creed Challenge Cup for vegetables. We hope the operation is a total success and that he will be challenging for honours in 2009.
In addition to prize money for those coming first, second and third in each class, trophies were awarded to the following: Bob Feasey, Kath Collins, Barbara Salter, Samantha Boon, Derek Huckle, Florence Welsh, Matilda Rodwell, Finlay Cameron, Jemma Jackson, Emily Godber and John Salter.
The judges had a hard time judging some of the classes and were very complimentary about the standard of the entries, which came not only from Lavendon, but also from the neighbouring villages.
There were more visitors to the Show this year, which may have been due partly to BBC Three Counties Radio using the village as the focus for its three hour ‘Greenhouse’ broadcast from 11am to 2pm. The intention was to broadcast live from the village hall, but a ‘technical problem’ prevented this, so the link was between the Luton BBC studio and a landline radio link in the Horseshoe pub.
Gill Gauntlett, the presenter, interviewed a variety of village people including John Panter, who spoke about the history of the village; Kath Collins about the Show; Ian Goldman, about his Horseshoe pub – he also submitted a ‘menu of the week’ for the programme; Tony Collins, who spoke about the Lavendon Narrow Gauge Railway; Janet Howe, headteacher of Lavendon School shared the microphone with two pupils, Richard Boon and Kennedy Clark.
