Olney & district Historical Society
A reproduction of Oliver Ratcliff’s popular book entitled Olney, Bucks is available and now on sale
The book was
originally published in 1907 and is colloquially known as Ratcliff’s second almanac.
The 250 page, fully illustrated, reproduction is published by the Society in commemoration of the book’s centenary last year.
The book provides a wealth of information on Olney one hundred years ago, and includes:
G an extensive insight into the relatively poor social conditions prevailing in Olney at the beginning of the last century;
G the extremely broad range of products and services available from the long list of Olney’s traders;
G descriptions of Olney’s churches, clubs and associations, together with the local devil-lore, jokes and cartoons, reveal the local activities, pastimes and humour of the period.
