Olney Tennis Club
SUMMER TENNIS CAMPS PACKED WITH YOUNGSTERS
Our club coach Nigel Willard ran popular tennis camps through August for all ages and over 400 juniors from three upwards took part. The camps helped many kids get a good taste for tennis and we hope to see them playing for years to come. See the photo of one of the younger groups at the end of session with the coach and his assistants.
SEPTEMBER COACHING
To satisfy the increasing demand for coaching from all quarters in Olney, Nigel, our club coach is running more sessions than ever this autumn.
For Juniors, there are Toddler sessions on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. There are also courses for Minis who are under 10 and there are three levels. These take place after school on Tuesdays and also on Saturday mornings. There is also a Junior Club session on Saturday mornings.
For Adults, the popular Rusty Racket sessions return for those who have not played for a time and want to get into tennis again. There is also a New to Tennis session which will show you the basics and help you enjoy the game. Individual lessons can also be booked.
To find out more and to sign up, call Nigel, our on 07946 734377 or email him at nigelwillard@tiscali.co.uk.
AFTER SCHOOL CLUB AT OLNEY MIDDLE SCHOOL STARTING
We are delighted that following successful such clubs at other local schools, Olney Middle school will be running its own after school club. This will give the students the chance to hit some balls and get a good taste for tennis at the school.
TEAM UPDATES
At time of going to press, the final tables are not out yet to show the team placings. There have been some good results at the end of the
season. The Mens A
have struggled but
went to Leighton
Buzzard to play the
usually tricky
Vagabonds and won
6-2 thanks to Les
Folds, Mike
MacDonnell, Bob
Allen and Simon
Barter. The Ladies A
beat Milton Keynes A
also 6-2 with good
performances by Avril
Soman, Katie Bennett,
Gill Hogston and
Eleanor Carter and
the team has won
most of its matches
over the season. The
Ladies C has been
playing our strong
juniors and lately,
young teenagers
Laura McCoubrey,
Amy Hulley and Abbie
Reynolds teamed up
with Rosemary Fenton. The Mens Bucks team has a record of W2, L2, D1 and is sitting in mid table with one to play in September.
The Ladies B team, captained by Lynda Baker, completed their matches with a win and a loss, and so have finished a great season with five wins from seven matches and may be promoted.
AMERICAN HANDICAP TOURNAMENTS
We ran the third tournament of the summer season and again it proved popular with all places taken well in advance. There was a great combination of regulars, Rusty Rackets and Juniors. After lots of short games played between tastings of Lynda Baker’s cream teas, the final was between top junior Amy Hulley and old hand Simon Barter against Rusty Racket Liz Brewster and Olney’s own Mr Elastic, Gun Chui Hwang (see photo). Amy played particularly well to win a close match with Simon.
The final tournament of the summer will be on Sunday 28 September at 2pm. It is a charity event supporting Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Anne Bacon is organising it and you can enter and support this worthy cause by calling her on 01234 240782, or putting your name down at the clubhouse.
CLUB TOURNAMENTS
These are all underway with lots of mini battles taking place at all levels. The finals are on 14 September at 1pm so come along and watch Olney’s finest in action
