Mother and ducklings
Going Quackers in Olney
Ark Wildlife Hospital came to the rescue of four trapped day-old ducklings at Olney’s Riverside Walk recently when residents spotted mother duck and thirteen ducklings in the road circling a storm drain. Unfortunately mother and family had gone by the time the manhole cover could be removed and the ducklings recovered, but thanks to the advice of Willow Vet Group and the Ark Wildlife Hospital the ducklings survived their ordeal.
Ark’s Margaret Burke says: “Ducks often nest away from the river in the gardens of nearby houses, for greater security. When they make their way down to the river it’s not uncommon for a few ducklings to fall down gratings. Ducklings should never be put in water if they are found as without mum to dry them they will pick up chest infections and die.”
Riverside Walk resident Richard McCann said: “It’s a good
idea to watch out for ducks crossing the road at this time of year. We have now fastened safety grilles over the drain covers to hopefully prevent this happening again. And thanks to Margaret and Ark the four rescued ducklings survived. What a great charity this is.”
