HAVE YOUR SAY
Dear Editor
I write this as an ex-member (16 years of service) of the Floral Fiesta Committee.
With reference to the items included in the last edition of Phonebox Magazine regarding the Floral Fiesta I would like to make a few observations.
I saw no notices of an extraordinary meeting advertised, and when I enquired of a few people they were exactly the same... No idea the meeting was being held or they would have attended. Where are the minutes of the meeting held to discuss the disposal of the Town’s money?
Whilst I have no objection to the donations made, in fact I think good choices were made apart from the Queen, why do we need a Queen when we have no Fiesta, and why should monies be put aside to ‘run’ the Court. As I understand it to attend other carnivals with a Court you need to be a member of the Carnival Guild, to belong to this you need to have a carnival... Back to square one. Having played the ‘Queen Mum’ role myself I am aware of the hard work involved, raising the funds to run the Court etc, but I do not agree that money belonging to the Town should be put aside for the benefit of a Carnival Court with no carnival.
The constitution of Fiesta says that any monies left should go to the Town Council to be held in trust until such a time that interested parties wish to start another Fiesta or equivalent event.
In answer to the comment from ‘A Fiesta Friend’ that Town Council members have tried to undermine the efforts of the committee, rather than undermine I think concern that the Town will lose a valuable event was more the case.
Are the anonymous members of this committee going to be available at the Town meeting to answer these questions?

Dear Editor
I was a member of Olney Floral Fiesta for a number of years and am appalled at the way the committee has disbanded it.
I never saw a notice of an extraordinary meeting advertised and I would like to see the minutes of the meeting in which was discussed the disposal of the TOWN’S MONEY. I have always understood that the constitution of Fiesta says that any monies left should go to the Town Council to be held in trust. How come they gave money away KNOWING they were going to disband and also money for the Queen to continue, CONTINUE WHAT? If there is no Fiesta then how come Fiesta money supports the Queen.
In principle the donations made were to good causes (apart from the Queens Court) but should never have been made, this must surely be misappropriation of Town people’s money – I question if they had the authority to do this.
I am also surprised at the comments about the Town Council as in all my years of involvement the Council went out of its way to help what was also good publicity for the town.
