In reply to Nick French’s letter in the February Phonebox about the quantity and type of wind in recent weeks, he may find the real-time wind metrics on the BLEW website to be of interest (http://www.blew.org.uk/faq-wind-data.php); however I also find it interesting to note that over the Christmas period – at a time of high electricity demand – there was practically no wind and clear blue skies for several days, illustrating why blanketing our countryside with turbines (23 proposed within four miles of Olney town centre) is not the answer to our nation’s energy demands – wind turbines still need to be backed up with a firm power supply when the wind does not blow.
Whilst not being an expert on the subject, it strikes me that one alternative could be tidal energy and it should be entirely predictable – after all, we live on an island surrounded by oceans which experience two tides a day!
The real answer though, is to stop taking our electricity usage for granted and encourage greater energy efficiency for both homes and businesses. I read with interest on the BBC website that Australia is just about to ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs. Maybe we do the same – and follow it up by turning the lights off at night in the office blocks of our major towns and cities?
