Pancake Race 2007
Tuesday February 20th
Now we are into the New Year with Christmas and all its celebrations behind us it is time to put Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Day - in your nice
new diary. We need around 20 Olney ladies to go to the Nat West Bank and pick up entry forms and fill them in and RETURN THEM to the bank.
The winner will get £150 plus £150 if the time is faster than Liberal plus a very generous further £150 from Van Weenens Estate Agents.
All entrants are encouraged to use the event to gain sponsorship money for a charity of their own choosing and the committee will add £100 to the Lady who raises the most.
We are delighted to announce that Deidre Bethune who has run in ten of the Olney races is going to travel to Liberal this year as Olney’s Official Representative and the Pancake Race Board there have agreed for her to join in and run in their race. As a long serving member of the Town Council and a past mayor of Olney it is very fitting that Deidre should be representing us and we are very grateful to her and Bill for their enthusiasm not just with Pancake Day but in the many events they are so involved with.
So to our race on February 20th. No Andrea Rawlings to carry the torch this year as the rules say three wins is enough – someone elses’ turn. Who is that someone going to be? Make sure of your chance to be added to that illustrious list of winners by getting your entry form from the Nat West.
It’s a fun day for everyone, not forgetting the reasons as the last day before the season of Lent. So please join in either as a runner or supporter. Don’t forget the children’s races on the Market Place start
at 10.30am with pancakes being served on the Market Place and in the Church Hall all morning. Charity stalls in the marquees and childrens’ entertainment with the ladies lining up for the race at 11.55am. Listen carefully for the warning bell from the church and the church warden will start the race.
Afterwards in the Parish Church is the Shriving Service where many of the ‘Olney’ hymns are sung including ‘Amazing Grace’. At the end of the service our Mayor Paul Watson will present the winner with the Church’s prize – a copy of the ‘Olney Hymns” and a representative from Liberal will present their prize. At the evening prizegiving party at the Working Mens’ Club the sponsors of the race, Francis Jackson Homes Ltd, will present, together with the Nat West Bank, the valuable money prizes and many sponsored gift prizes, every runner goes away with something!!!
By the end of the day a lot of tired people but with your support another successful day keeping alive this Olney tradition and all money raised will go to keeping the fabric of the Parish Church in good condition.

Now here is something that doesn’t come along every day...
In an attempt to cheer you up on a cold sponsors Francis Jackson Homes at 6 High
winter night with the utility bills going through the roof, huge wind turbines likely to be built up the road, a new school that’ll probably be ready about the time your children have children of their own and absolutely nowhere to park in town anymore – now for the good news . . . The Pancake Race Committee is giving you a free night out.
Did I read that correctly? you ask – YES, you did – The Pancake Race Party, after the forthcoming Pancake Race on Tuesday February 20th in the Olney Working Mens Club will be FREE.
The last couple of years we have shaken up the Pancake Race Party and held it in the Olney Rugby club. We’ve had entertainment, hot food, linked up with Liberal, Kansas, USA via web cams and the evenings have been a great success – BUT you had to pay to get in.
This coming year it will be FREE (as long as you are one of the lucky ones who have picked up your ticket from long time
Street, Olney, or from a member of the Committee).
The evening will have an American theme with music and dancing courtesy of local line- dance experts Boots & Boogie. We will once again link up with our American rivals in Liberal to either boast and show off if we’ve won again (remember Andrea’s famous victory last year?), or congratulate them but complain about our diffficult weather conditions if we loose|! There will be the usual prize-giving to our runners and a raffle with great prizes and as you’ve got in free you won’t be allowed to leave unless you buy a few tickets!!
There will be a total of 150 tickets for this event and you will need a ticket to get in to enjoy the fun-filled evening, so make a diary note and get along to Francis Jackson’s offices to get your ticket.

A big thank you to everyone who took part in Operation Christmas Child.
You will be very pleased to know that we collected around 450 shoebox gifts from Olney and surrounding villages, which is an increase on last year. The gifts will be going to needy children around Eastern Europe.
Thank you again. Hilary Terry
