These easy to grow hardy perennials carry colourful flowers and many different cultivars are available with tapered lily-like blooms, open star-like flowers or full and ruffled petals. Some daylilies have a coloured throat and texture can be shiny, satin or crepe-like. All plants have fresh green arching strap-like leaves which sometimes over-winter. Their flowers last for one day hence their common name , but on established plants are produced in succession so the display lasts for up to one month.
Taller Hemerocallis are quite structural and can be planted with grasses and other bold plants, or smaller varieties can be used at the front of the border. Ranging from 9 inches to 4 feet high, they tolerate a wide range of conditions including windy sites, dry or damp soil and sun or partial shade.
Many cultivars and varieties are available in various colours including ‘Black Magic’ (deep mahogany red), ‘Berlin Red’ (bright red with yellow throats), ‘Fairy Tale Pink’ (pale melon), ‘Catherine Woodbery (light lavender pink), ‘Golden Chimes’ (deep yellow), ‘Corky’ (pale lemon) and ‘Gentle Shepherd’ (near white with green throats). d

To encourage flowering spurs on Wisterias, cut back all wispy side-shoots to within five or six buds form the main branches.
Although heavy pruning of deciduous trees is normally done in winter, some species bleed badly or develop diseases unless pruned in mid-summer, when the wounds will heal quickly. Larger branches on Magnolias, Prunus, (including both ornamental and fruit trees) and walnuts can be safely sawn off, using a sharp saw and prune back close to the main trunk. If in doubt when dealing with large trees, call in the services of a tree surgeon to safely prune them. d
