sharing. The work of the Learning & Development Policy Development Committee was dealt a blow when Conservative group leader Ruth Jury unilaterally removed Andy Dransfield from the committee after bizarre allegations about his private life were revealed in the local press. Despite protestations from the rest of the committee, Ruth Jury refused to change her mind. Labour councillor Norman Miles joined the committee and was elected as the replacement chairman. It has to be said that Norman did a fantastic job in picking up the workload of the committee at a particularly difficult time. I am delighted to note that Norman is continuing to chair this committee for the coming year. The vice chair is Andy Dransfield, presumably following a dramatic U-turn by Ruth Jury?
Regular readers of this column will probably be aware of the great satisfaction I derive from the Health Scrutiny aspects of my work. I look forward to continuing work with the Hospital Trust and the Primary Care Trust and other partners over the coming months. It is also intended that the council will continue to promote the role of scrutiny by contributing a series of debates on BBC Three Counties Radio. The first debate, possibly on Public Health, is provisionally scheduled for 17th July. I took part in the previous health debate on Friday 4th November 2005 with Rachel Flowers, Assistant Director of Public Health. I will also be taking part in the second ‘Shaping Health’ event in Middleton Hall on Tuesday 25th July. d
