                                    62 Phonebox Magazine | October 2025QUIZ CORNERAs humans, it is our responsibility to make sure that wild and domestic animals are kept safe in their habitats. World Animal Day, which falls every year on 4th October, aims to help do just that, along with other campaigns such as stopping product testing on animals, also a form of abuse. The day was founded by German journalist Heinrich Zimmerman in 1925, who wrote for a magazine %u2018Mensch und Hund%u2019 (Man and Dog) about animal welfare. Through his magazine he formed and advertised World Animal Day, which was initially observed on 24th March. The date was changed to 4th October in 1929. The only countries to celebrate the day were Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland. The day was offi cially adopted by the International Animal Protection Congress in 1931, and it fi nally became an international holiday. Its aim is to elevate animals to the status they deserve. There has been a lot of progress regarding animal protection and habitat conservation since the fi rst World Animal Day. However, there is still a long way to go.Even today, species are endangered by poachers and illegal hunters, pets are still bred for profi t with no real care, and animals are still used in testing. Animal lovers can raise awareness, especially this month, about these issues, and campaign for the improvement of animal care standards and their protection from abuse.Try our wordsearch of African animals, many of which are suff ering due to poaching or testing.A special day aims, once a year, to raise awareness about the abuse and illegal killing of animals around the world and help with their ongoing welfare and protection.A T J A T N P N K T T L V U L T U R E C X S ID I L A Z R J R W A E C O W K C I U H L O Q LA K B A R E G D A B Y E N O H H Z E B R A F LL N Q A O E T H U C Z T N A H P E L E F L V TE J S U M A T O P O P P I H G T L C T K F F LG H G W Y S M A A E O O K T A C O C M C V F EE I Q Z N C N L F R X F V H Q N N U K U E M OH X S M H G W F C F B S O J I L H D T B O F PA S Y Y O A A U W A S Q U H A D E O T R Z I AP F R L R R P N E O Z N R Q E A T E W E H J RJ A I T I I Q L J A C K A L T L O T N T M J DX N H G N M P F W L A X M D U A L L J A N P WU O M E L I D O C O R C C F Y A K E A W Z B IG G O H E G D E H B N B O N O B O R Z F H S LK M H K S Q M Z K S P R I N G H A R E A F X DR A G M O L X N S S A L L I R O G F R E G U EA N A D O E E Z N A P M I H C I R T S O M T BV D S M G Y E F H A V A N D F Q E X H J Y S ED R A Z N F V Y O I M P A L A B J A W C T E ER I B B O P E N O O B A B E E U L I N W Y R SA L L R M N K T E N E G P E G N I L H N H V TA L E E A N M J Q X R Z S M O V O B V M X A LT Y Q S A V C T T U S T K V V E N F K L I L ZHere%u2019s what you%u2019re looking for:%u2022 AARDVARK %u2022 BABOON %u2022 BAT %u2022 BONOBO %u2022 BUFFALO %u2022 CHEETAH %u2022 CHIMPANZEE %u2022 CROCODILE %u2022 ELEPHANT %u2022 GAZELLE %u2022 GELADA %u2022 GENET %u2022 GIRAFFE %u2022 GORILLA %u2022 HARTEBEEST %u2022 HEDGEHOG %u2022 HIPPOPOTAMUS %u2022 HONEY BADGER %u2022 HYENA %u2022 HYRAX %u2022 IMPALA %u2022 JACKAL %u2022 LEOPARD%u2022 LION %u2022 MANDRILL %u2022 MEERKAT %u2022 MONGOOSE %u2022 OSTRICH %u2022 PANGOLIN %u2022 PORCUPINE %u2022 RHINOCEROS %u2022 SABLE %u2022 SERVAL %u2022 SPRINGHARE %u2022 VULTURE %u2022 WARTHOG %u2022 WATERBUCK %u2022 WILDEBEEST %u2022 ZEBRA Save the animals
